Are you joyful?
Our mindsets, our words, and our attitudes are our joy stealer.
I have an amazing coach who frequently says, "watch your words." (Thank you @Jennifer Allwood) #CreatorsInnerCircle
There is power in the tongue (see verse Proverbs 18:21). There is more power in our words than we want to admit.
Our minds listen deeply to the words that come from our mouth. We talk to hear ourselves and to learn our desires. I often need to talk things out to make a clear decision. Speaking is powerful.
The word of God says out of the heart springs forth our words and thoughts (see Matthew 15:18-19, Luke 6:45, Mark 7:21, Proverbs 15:28, Proverbs 15:7, 16:23). If our heart doesn't hold the word of God imprinted on it and God's wisdom, then we will pour out that which we have put there. What is there is often a compilation of ingrained images of acceptable or "cool" behavior from our culture—lying, gossip, complaining, cursing, cutting remarks, crass jokes that hurt, words from our childhood that tore us down—so we pour those out on others. We listen to commercials, shows, music that talk about things often in the shallowest, cutting, and complaining way. And then we wonder why our minds are unfocused, unhappy, and full of negativity.
Today's verse Jesus talked about His joy and our joy. I know this harsh world brings pain, trails, challenges, and crisis—but we double the pain and destruction of life circumstances by the very mindset and words that we repeat over our circumstances and life.
Start today and notice each sentence that you say. Start today to declare joy from the blessings of your life. I heard a story of a man that went from penniless and no home to owning and renting out homes because he started by saying thank you for the broken pencil in his hand and the pad of paper to write his dreams on.
On my bathroom door I have sheets of paper that we write our blessings on. It is a reminder to me to cultivate not just faith (Psalm 37:3) but cultivate a mind of gratitude and joy. It takes intentional work to tear down complaining and replace it with words that affirm and build life into ourselves and others (Ephesians 4:29).
Do you want joy and to have real joy in Christ? Let's build it together. See you all tomorrow afternoon and let's talk more about talk 😉
